FRAMES
Different
eyeglass frame materials expand your options for a
new look and comfort. Our opticians can help you to
find eyeglasses with qualities that are important
to you. There are three basic categories of the materials
for frames and each has its own unique strengths.
Plastic Frames
Another name for plastic frames
is zyl, zylonite, or cellulose. Zyl is a very cost
effective and creative option for eyewear and is lightweight.
If you want a variety of colors for your frame then
zyl is your material.
Another plastic based material is
cellulose acetate propionate which is hypoallergenic.
It is extremely lightweight and has more transparency
and gloss than other plastics.
Nylon is also a premier material
for plastic frames. It is typically made of gliamides.
Nylon frames are very resistant to hot and cold and
are more flexible, yet very stiff. The today’s
wrap around frames as well as other shapes that are
difficult to produce are made of nylon.
Metal Frames
Monel is the most
widely used material in the manufacturing of metal
frames. It is resistant to corrosion.
Titanium and Beta- titanium
material is used to add lightweight durability and
strength to metal frames. Titanium eyewear can be
produced in a variety of looks with a hint of color.
Titanium and Beta are hypoallergenic. Titanium can
be combined with other material, such as nickel and
copper, to reduce the cost. Another metal based frame
material is Beryllium, a steel gray metal. It is a
lower cost alternative to titanium eyewear. It resists
corrosion and tarnish making an excellent choice for
people who have high skin acidity or spend a lot of
time around salt water. It comes in a variety of colors
and is very flexible.
Flexon is a titanium
based alloy. The unique feature of this material is
that it wants to keep its shape. Marchon was the first
to manufacture flexon eyewear, which are sometimes
called memory metal frames, because after twisting,
bending, and crushing the frames return to their original
shape. They are an excellent choice for children.
Stainless steel frames
are another category of metal frames. It is an alloy
of steel and chromium. Stainless steel frames are
lightweight and nickel free making it a good choice
for people with allergies.
The last metal based eyewear is
made of aluminum. These frames are
lightweight and highly resistant to corrosion. Aluminum
is used primarily in high end eyewear.
Other
Some very expensive frames are made
of wood, bone, buffalo horn, gold, or silver. They
are handmade and each frame is unique and one-of-a-kind.
EYEGLASS LENSES
High-Index Lenses - High-Index
material offers superior optics in a thinner,
lighter lens.
Polycarbonate Lenses - Polycarbonate
lenses are very impact resistant. They are great for
children, sports and safety glasses.
Regular Plastic (CR-39)
- CR-39 is the basic lens with good optics.
They are a very good option for lower prescriptions
and are lightweight.
Glass Lenses - Glass
lenses provide excellent optics. They are heavier
than plastic lenses but extremely resistant to scratches.
Multifocal lenses - Multifocal
lenses come in a variety of forms depending on your
activities. They can be lined, such as bifocal or
trifocal, or without lines such as progressive lenses.
There are a lot of improvements made with the progressive
lenses to make them more adaptable. The new generations
of progressive lenses are called free-forms, which
provide excellent distance, near, and intermediate
vision.
Wave-front Lenses - Wave-front
lenses can correct higher order aberrations which
result in better vision, especially at night.
Transition and Photo-Gray
Lenses - Transition and photo-gray lenses
lighten and darker quicker. There are also drive-wear
transition lenses that are polarized.
